Legal basis is the “Law On Trademarks And Indications Of Geographical Origin”, in force since July 15, 1999 as well as the “Law On Industrial Property Institutions and Procedures”, which will be in force January 1, 2016.

Requirements:
- Name and address of the applicant;
- Prints of the trademark;
- List of goods and/or services in accordance with the international classification;
- Certified copy of priority document if priority is to be claimed (may be filed to the Latvian Trademark Office within three months from the filing date);
- Signed Power of Attorney, legalization and notarization are not required (may be filed to the Latvian Trademark Office within two months from the filing date).
Procedure:
- After the filing procedure, that can take up to three months, depending on all the documents that must be submitted, an official notification will be issued within four or five months. The notification will state the application was received.
- Further on, another period of three months will be used for the examination of the trademark and the decision of issuing or rejection of the trademark certificate.
- If the decision is positive, the applicant will be required to pay the registration and publication fees.
- Once these are paid, the trademark will be registered in the State Register of Trademarks in Latvia and will be published in the Official Gazette.
- During three months, oppositions against the trademark registration may be submitted with the Patent Office.
- The processing time from first filing to the registration is approx. 6-10 months.
Duration and Renewal: A trademark registration is valid for 10 years from date of application.The registration is renewable for periods of 10 years.
