Trademarks and Service Marks in Cyprus are regulated by the Law Cap. 268 (as amended by the Laws 63/1962, 69/1971, 206/1990 and 176(I)/2000).Trademarks in Cyprus are also governed by the Madrid Agreement (1891) and the Madrid Protocol (1989) concerning the international registration of trademarks, by the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights, EU directives and regulations.
 
Trademark registration classification:

Requirements:  

  • A simply signed power of attorney.
  • A detailed list of the goods/services and the classes pertaining thereto.
  • The full particulars of the applicant.
  • Nine prints of the trademark, if in color. If black and white, one print is sufficient.

Procedure:

  • The application process includes an examination on formalities, an examination on absolute grounds and a search for prior trademark rights on the Register.
  • Once the application is filed, the Cypriot Trademark Registrar will examine the petition and publish it in the Official Gazette for two months.
  • If no opposition is registered, the Cypriot Registrar will issue a registration certificate with a copy of the trademark.
  • The processing time from first filing to registration or first office action is approx. 1 year. 

Duration and Renewal: A trademark registration is valid for 7 years. Renewal is possible for periods of 14 years.
